ELSTEAD EVENING WI

Report of meeting held on Tuesday 7th June

President, May Deaville, welcomed members and a visitor, Betty Fields. Our Treasurer, Joan Wigley, was pleased to report that the sum of £200 had been raised at the coffee morning and sale last month.

Speaker, retired Detective Inspector Alan Bridgman, needed little introduction as we had previously enjoyed his interesting talk on The Wanborough Hoard.  This time he spoke on his experiences in Policing from the 1960's emphasising the use of humour to keep a balance in the stressful job involved in dealing with traffic accidents, crime and violence.  He quoted Ella Wheeler Wilcox 'Laugh and the world laughs with you, Weep and you weep alone, For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own'.

He said that the British Bobby tried to use sensitive policing compared with the forceful control used in other countries, but to remember that as well as being a Police Service they were also a Police Force.  Mr Bridgman gave us hilarious examples of incidents where a joke had helped to ease a strained atmosphere and reduce tension and he was warmly thanked by Susan Holmes for his revealing and funny talk.

The WI monthly magazine, Surrey News, describing events organised throughout the County was distributed to members and it had been decided that the cost of this would be borne by our WI for this year.

The May visit to Grayshott Pottery had been enjoyed by the party, but we would have liked to watch more painting and decoration in the workshop.  On 21st June we shall be visiting Godalming Museum and members were asked for suggestions for future visits.

Over 200 Surrey Artists are displaying their arts and crafts during June and Joan Wigley will be demonstrating her weaving, together with a friend who would be displaying her craft of beadwork.

Walkers will be meeting at Tilford Green for June's walk and on Friday 15th July we will be meeting at The Moat car par for a walk to Thursley organised by Venetia Pierce, with lunch at The Three Horseshoes halfway.

The Surrey Federation challenge to Stretch a Tenner is being taken up by Susan Holmes and Mary Williams when they will be arranging a Cream Tea in Susan's garden on 13th August.  Members and friends will be made very welcome at a cost of £2.50.

Our speaker for July is Mr Riley, with a talk entitled 'Women are from Selfridges, Men from B & Q' and visitors to the URC Hall on the first Tuesday of the month will be made welcome.

STAMPS  STAMPS  STAMPS .

Some folk kindly save their used stamps and hand in to the U.R.C. or place in the box provided, for the work of 'The Leprosy Mission. Thank you for doing so, but may I point out, and refer you to the notice on the box, that stamps must be trimmed to approximately a quarter of an inch from the perforated edge, otherwise your help is completely wasted, and so many have to be discarded as they are no good.

Many hundreds are dealt with, and it is a very time consuming job if they are just torn from the envelope any how, as many are, so if you could trim your own before handing them in, it would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Freda Sheppard
