DAVID HARMER - YOUR SURREY COUNTY COUNCILLOR

I would like to thank those who supported me in the recent County Council election. Of course, I do recognise that a number of people supported other candidates, but I am now available to help everyone who needs assistance with County Council matters.

All Councillors are appointed to their Local Committee, which deals mainly with detailed highway and transportation matters, as well as other issues that are specific to our area. The first meeting is on Friday, July 15th, and monthly thereafter.

I have been appointed to the Transportation Select Committee, which deals with highway and transportation policy issues which affect the whole County. The first meeting is on June 16th, when we will discuss the performance of the highway contractors, amongst other things. I have been appointed Vice-Chairman of this Committee.

I have also been appointed to the Corporate Select Committee which deals with a range of issues, in particular the Council's budget and the proposed move of County Hall from Kingston to Woking. The first meeting is on June 28th.

Thank you for electing me as your County Councillor. I look forward to being of service to the local community.

You can contact me either by phone on 01428 609 792 or by fax on 01428 608 437 or by post at Wyanston, Tower Road, Hindhead, Surrey GU26 6ST. In due course I will have a Surrey CC-based e-mail address, and I will publish that as soon as it is working.

From David Harmer, recently elected County Councillor for Waverley Western Villages (which includes Elstead).

ST JAMES LADIES FELLOWSHIP

First of all, very many thanks to everyone who supported our coffee morning in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice. We raised the magnificent sum of £186.80, and had a very enjoyable morning as well. Congratulations to all concerned,

Pat Pearce came to our May meeting to give us another of her magnificent flower arranging demonstrations. It is always fascinating to watch an expert at work., especially for those of us whose idea of flower arranging is to "stick something in a vase!" and see how something really beautiful is created out of what can be quite unpromising beginnings.

"Think Pink" was the title of her first display, and she then went on to do a very striking arrangement of yellow roses in a blue jug. A beautiful low arrangement of orange roses ,and orange and pink azaleas certainly took my eye, and she then rounded it off with a very fresh looking green and white arrangement in a tall green vase and a beautiful circular display with a mauve and pink theme. All this as well as knocking up a couple of beautiful little baskets out of odds and ends. ! Not bad for one afternoon!

Our next meeting in June is our Scrabble Tournament, and then we have a break from indoor meetings until September. On Saturday July 9th, we are going by coach to Hatfield House and gardens in Hertfordshire. The house is very interesting, with memories of Elizabeth
I, and the roses should be looking good in the gardens. We leave the village at 11 a.m. returning at around 6.15 p.m. Lunch is available at Hatfield or you can bring a picnic. Cost is £15 a head to include coach and entrance fees. Everyone is very welcome to join us. Please phone Gill Drew, 702237, if you would like to book a place.

Gillian Drew.
