Some time ago I attended a get together with other Poppy Appeal organisers in Cranleigh Royal British Legion.  This is where we swap stories and find out what went right and what went wrong with the aim to make it easier to collect for Appeal, and to make giving to Appeal a more rewarding experience.  I would welcome comments from anyone in Elstead, donor or collector as to how to improve things.

This year will probably be the last big commemoration of the last war, the "Second World War" as it is known.  60 years ago the war ended in Europe and Later in Japan.  Thousands of men and women died, and thousands still suffer to this day.  That is why the Royal British Legion is holding (or will have held) many events in the United Kingdom to give thanks to the war veterans, and present them with veteran badges, so that these hero's and heroines can be easily identified.  I hope they will wear these badges with as much pride as the medals they won so gallantly all those years ago.

The need for the services provided by the Legion will increase as time goes by.  Funds are always needed to improve the way of life of ex-service people, and I am proud to do this in Elstead.  I cannot do this alone.  The team I have are very loyal and hardworking but it still is a struggle to cover everything.  If you feel that you can help, join the team.  Are you interested?  If so call or write to me and I will come to see you.

Thank you.

ELSTEAD SEPTUAGENARIAN TAKES THE PLUNGE!

On the 2nd of September Brienne Skewes of Milford Road, Elstead will parachute from a plane to help raise money for Harrison's Heart Fund, a Charity that funds research into children born with complex and life threatening conditions.

Brienne, who has never done anything like this before, seems undeterred by her daring project.

"We have half an hour's preparation, that's all, but I shall, I hope, be safely attached to a handsome instructor!"
