Just
for a moment we dreamed a mad dream. Just for a few brief
days we clutched at the seemingly impossible. For one week
Elstead's two I'Anson League teams were top of their respective
tables. Wow!
It didn't look good for the Ones when they lost to bottom
side Lindford. Oh dear! A winning draw against Headley looked
better, especially as 202 runs were scored with 59 for Khalik
Ahmed and 61 for Fazal Syed. Still top of the table!
Defeat at Grayshott, fast improving after a poor start to
the season, allowed Cranleigh St Andrews to sneak ahead but
5 wickets for 15 runs by Fazal saw off I'Anson Cup holders,
Puttenham. There was a definite spring in captain Morgan Pearse's
step. However a heavy defeat to leaders Cranleigh put paid
to that.
It doesn't take much to get Morgan down though! And what better
than to reach the Stevens Cup final to give the whole club,
the whole village, a lift! Puttenham were defeated along the
way in a match which got a little tense at times and bordered
on acrimony on occasions. Chiddingfold, too, were put to the
sword on a night of rain, gloom and tight bowling. So Grayshott
await!
The Twos are still going well. Defeat of the Bourne, including
66 for Simon Wade, 50 for the prolific Richard Jones and 51
for skipper Ian Gould, opening the innings for the first time,
saw the side go top of Division Four. Dave Tosh's 5 for 8
sealed it though. Winning draws followed against Cranleigh
St Andrews and Peper Harow who hardly chased a gettable target.
The first of these included another 50 for Ian Gould but when
he went on holiday the team visited Cranleigh and lost, despite
a fine 65 from David Tye. The inability to bowl sides out
looks to be costing the 2nd XI
some better results and could, ultimately, compromise the
side's ability to gain promotion.
Let's hope not! And let's hope the Ones can get their heads
down and score the runs needed to beat their rivals. AND let's
hope for a fantastic result in the Stevens Cup final (many
of you will know the result by the time you read this but
I'm sure you'll forgive me dreaming a little longer).
Finally a word for Chris Mude! Now a regular in the seconds
he scores runs every week and has topped off his season with
two fifties for the Under 15s. Well done, Chris! Surely a
senior fifty is just around the corner.
