NEWS FROM ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL

The Council has approved the appointment of Tony Cheeseman to the post of Village Handyman. Mr Cheeseman will be carrying out minor maintenance work in the  village green areas, at the two recreation grounds and at the cemetery. The Council knows that there are many small jobs to be done around the village which are uneconomic or very difficult for a contractor to carry out and therefore we have decided to change to a new system.

The control of traffic and traffic calming systems are subjects that continually come up in our Council discussions because many people in the village are worried about safety on the roads. For many years we have engaged in discussion with Surrey County Council Highway engineers on traffic calming methods and the possibility of a pedestrian crossing. At least two major consultation exercises have been carried out by Surrey CC but nothing has transpired because of their inability to allocate money to any scheme. We are aware that the  schemes proposed in the past are just history and are unlikely to be revived. We have been told informally that there is a possibility of a limited traffic calming scheme in the region of the school but we have no firm information on this nor any knowledge of the likely funding. We have insisted again that full consultation is essential before any decision is made by Surrey CC.

We have requested that surveys should be carried out to determine whether or not a pedestrian crossing would be a good safety measure in Milford Rd. The Highway Engineers have reported that there is insufficient pedestrian movement to justify a crossing there but the highest number of pedestrian movements is in Thursley Rd near the SPAR shop. However the Council is not convinced that this is the right place and is asking for a further review.

GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL LIBRARY

For your theological, pastoral, devotional and church history reading, have you visited Guildford Cathedral Library?

It is located on the South side of Guildford Cathedral, just beyond the organ loft, and is open to members every day (except Tuesday mornings and Sunday mornings, and when there are special events in the Cathedral). We have a stock of about 5000 books for loan and a small reference collection. Some of the more recent books, linked to training courses and pastoral work of the clergy are provided by the Guildford Diocesan Ministry Course team and can be borrowed only by students sponsored by the team, but any member may consult these books in the Library. The collection is particularly strong in Biblical commentaries, Christian ethics and church history, the stock being mostly modern, but with standard works from all periods. We add about 400 new books each year, including gifts from clergy and lay people, which fill gaps in our collections, and have recently received a significant donation of most of the works of William Temple. Meanwhile, we can post or e-mail our lists of new additions to members on request. The Librarians are usually there on Tuesday afternoons to give assistance and to welcome new members.

The subscription  is only £5 for one year or £10 for two years, and membership is open to anyone interested, whether Anglican or a member of another church or none. Membership is free to licensed clergy, but they must register as members to obtain a membership card to gain entry to the library. Schools and colleges with students taking A-level religious studies may take out corporate membership, and our stocks are complimentary to those of the Education  Centre in providing aids to religious education. If you are interested  in becoming a member or in receiving lists of additions, please call at the Library on a Tuesday afternoon,
