Dear
Friends, I have just received this, and thought I ought to
share it with you:
The Sustainable Communities
Bill campaign - Local public meeting - your support requested.
You are invited to a public meeting to discuss the Sustainable
Communities Bill and how it will affect communities in Farnham
and across Surrey. The Bill aims to reverse the process of
Ghost Town Britain. Local Works is supported by Christian
Ecology Link as well as 60 other national organisations including
trade associations and environmental groups. Input and views
from local parishioners are important and you can ask if local
MP, Jeremy Hunt, will support the Bill. Speeches will be followed
by discussion. Details for the meeting are:
Date: Thursday 10th Nov
Time: 7.30 pm - 9 pm
Venue: Church House, Union Road, Farnham GUS 7PT
Speakers: Jeremy Hunt (MP for South West Surrey), Steve Shaw
(Local Works Campaign Coordinator), 3rd speaker TBC
Chair: Cllr Victor Scrivens (Cabinet Member for the Environment)
There is a real problem of community decline, e.g. in the
last decade Britain has lost a fifth of all its Post Offices,
a quarter of all its independent grocery stores and a third
of all its bank branches. There has also been a huge decline
in other local services and facilities - local doctors, police
stations, chemists, independent pubs and leisure facilities.
Local industry declining: local jobs decreasing. All meaning
that people have to drive further, down someone else's
quiet street, polluting someone else's atmosphere, simply
to shop work or play. The elderly and other people without
cars find it increasingly difficult to gain access to necessary
services and facilities. Local Works says more local powers
am needed, not centrally imposed strategy!
It is happening all over the country - in thousands of communities
small and large, urban and rural This is Ghost Town Britain.
Often local people complain
that they want to solve these problems but have no power to
do so whilst Whitehall continues to impose one-size-fits all
plans and policies. This Bill will change that.
Your Support is Vital - Persuading government and 'the
Whitehall machine' to relinquish power and be responsible
to local communities will not be easy. It will take sustained
pressure from people and communities everywhere. That is why
the support of your council is vital I do hope. therefore,
that you will come along to the public meeting - it's
free.
We hope that you will be able to help: We look forward to
hearing from you.
