ELSTEAD EVENING WI

Report of Meeting held on Tuesday 4 October 2005

On the occasion of the Evening WI's 31st Birthday we were delighted to welcome Liz Glover of 'Toute Sweet' with her dazzling array of bouquets made from chocolates, sweets and even fruit teas for the less sweet-toothed of us.

Liz researched her initial idea in America where there are many franchises producing these gifts.  She then proceeded to demonstrate to our members the transformation of chocolates into flowers and then arranging them in flowerpots or colourful mugs.  We were all given a pack of coloured foil, acetate and wire to try our hand and finished up with an attractive chocolate buttonhole to take home.  Liz was warmly thanked by our President, May, for showing us her unusual creations which are used for weddings, birthdays and Christmas gifts.

November is the month when WI's have their Annual General Meetings in order to vote for officers and new committees and May asked for nominations or volunteers to stand for 2006.  Our President, Secretary and Treasurer are gallantly willing to continue for another year if required, which makes a good start to the meeting.

Activities for the month include the walk on 14th October when we will meet at The Barley Mow, Sands for a walk around the Crooksbury area. The walkers for November will meet at 10.45 a.m. at the car park near Seale, followed by lunch at The Manor tea rooms.  For further information please contact Adele Shoesmith.

We were very grateful for Joan Wigley showing us the Millenium Tapestry which is hung outside the Council Offices in Godalming.  It measures 9'6" x 4'6" and took 2,000 hours of weaving.  The tapestry depicts various historic buildings and areas of local interest in the Waverley borough.  Anyone is welcome to view the tapestry by asking at the Council Offices reception desk.  We shall be meeting on October 18th for a visit to Farnham Museum, followed by tea at Elphicks.  Our walks with the Afternoon WI and local visits are popular social occasions for all our members.

Jean Barwick has kindly agreed to contact speakers and organise our programme for next year.  Members are interested in having more craft and cookery demonstrations together with art, travel and calligraphy and are looking forward to a diverse programme for 2006.

Congratulations were extended to one of our long-standing members, Joan Howard, who, together with her band of loyal helpers, has raised over £2,000 in the last five years for the Meningitis Trust by running an annual coffee morning and sale.  In future years there will be a special Bingo Session run in aid of the same cause.

Late of Grasshoppers, Lower Ham Lane Elstead.

June passed away as a result of complications arising from two strokes in the Royal Surrey County Hospital Guildford recently.  My father and I would like to thank the people of Elstead for all the kindness and support shown to us at this sad time.  We were both surprised by the attendance a the Funeral at St James' Church, and I wish to thank the prayer group for their services.

At the time of writing the collection for Hydestile Animal Hospital raised £243.17. I think that you have to appreciate and love people when you can, as you never know when you will be parted.
