NEWS FROM ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL

The section of Woolfords Lane up to the cemetery has now been properly surfaced so we no longer have to drive around the potholes and there is no longer a safety hazard in the approach to the cemetery.

I wonder how many people have noticed that there are no road name signs in Thursley Road and Hookley Lane. Waverley Borough Council will be putting in new signs at our request.

The village clock is beyond repair so we will be purchasing a new model - we apologise that it has been incorrect yet again.

All Parish Councils are increasing financial controls at the request of the auditors. We have already introduced quarterly financial monitoring of income and expenditure and we will also be introducing risk analysis on our decisions.

As the Thursley Road Pavilion Trust still has a funding shortfall we will be examining our finances to see if some degree of additional help can be found. The construction of the pavilion is progressing well with the interior work now underway.

We hope to complete the Thursley Road Recreation Play area very soon and then start to deal with the Burford Lodge Recreation Play area.

Our Parish Council Handyman has been renovating our village seats to very good effect and he has also been carrying out long outstanding improvements to Woolfords Lane Cemetery.

ELSTEAD AFTERNOON WI.

The Annual General Meeting of Elstead Afternoon W.I. proved to be an exciting and eventful occasion. President Anne Moon retrieved the Southey Cup from Stoneleigh W.I. to enable Elstead to take their half- year of recognition for being joint winners of the cup, which was awarded for top W.I. in Surrey at the March SFWI meeting in Dorking.

Six members attended the Autumn Federation meeting in Dorking, where the two famous speakers were Kate Adie and Bunny Campione.

There was a good attendance at the Farnham Group of W.I.s on 20th October where took, its turn to write the press report and placed an entry in the `Victoriana' competition.

A warm welcome was extended to six new members - Muriel Lees, Jean Stevens, Betty Burton, Maureen Horsey, Jean Barwick and Hilary McLaren, bringing the total membership to seventy three.

After reports from the nine activity groups, Diane Tulett and May Deaville acted as tellers in the election of a new committee and President.  Anne Moon was elected President for a second year of office to enthusiastic applause.  Presentations of cyclamen plants were made to Renee Clarke and Betty Sergeant for manning the sales tables, to Christine Welland for writing the press reports throughout the year and to Doris Parker, retiring committee member.

As there was no speaker at this meeting, the Art and Craft groups set up an exhibition of their year's work including a beautiful quilt covered in Teddy Bears made by Mrs. D. Beeson; Art work included an 'Alpine Poppy' in pastels by Pam Duke, a watercolour of 'Hankley Common in Autumn' by Ursula Dunlop, 'a Sunset with reflections in a lake' by Mrs. M. Welsted , an oil painting of a 'Beech tree in full leaf in sunlight' by Mary Sharpe and two pastels by Jill Stewart of 'A collie dog' and a design of 'Dandelion puffballs'. There were many other excellent exhibits for members to enjoy.  The Art Group is now full and a waiting list is being compiled.

The pre-Christmas lunch will be on 13th December and the next meeting is on 1st December when Mrs. Hobson presents 'Songs from the Shows'.
