LADIES'
FELLOWSHIP
The Ladies' Fellowship finished the year with their normal
Christmas party, held at the home of Brian and Diane Tulett,
and, sadly, the Fellowship has now had to close.
The group, known as the Young Wives and affiliated to the
Mothers' Union, was started in 1954 by Mrs Rita Millett
Meetings were held in the afternoons at The Hermitage (the
home of Mrs Stewart), when young mothers would came with their
children. When Mrs Millett and her sister moved to Stable
House, Burford Lodge, meetings were held in the evening with
a flourishing membership of between 25-30. I succeeded Mrs
Millett as Leader in 1965, when we were all still young enough
to challenge other groups to netball and rounders matches!
I handed over leadership to Mrs Betty Roberts in 1979, and,
when she moved from the village, Mrs Noelle Ingham took her
place and the name changed to "Wives' Group''.
Miss Gillian Drew rescued the group from closure when Noelle
lngham moved away, but, with more women returning to work,
numbers were fewer and members older. The name changed again,
to St. James' Ladies Fellowship, subsequently dropping
"St. James".
Gillian's marrying and leaving the village left a gap,
which was difficult to fill. We are all that much older and
numbers have dwindled further, and, reluctantly, we feel the
time has came to close the group.
Our thanks to Diane and Brian Tulett for hosting a very enjoyable
final party, and to Diane for 'holding the fort' over
the past few months.
