J.S.
Bach
St. Matthew Passion
Godalming and Woking Choral Societies will combine to
give a performance of one of the great religious masterpieces,
J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion, at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday
8th April in Guildford Cathedral.
This work, traditionally performed at Easter, relates
the story of the crucifixion of Christ, as told in St.
Matthew's gospel and Christ is seen as the radiant saviour.
The dramatic ingredients are heard from the Evangelist,
Christ, other individual characters and the crowd.
The reflective commenting elements are found in the arias,
the non dramatic choruses and the chorales. It is
a work capable of stirring deep emotions.
The combined choirs, conducted by Nicholas Steinitz and
accompanied by the Linden Baroque Orchestra, will be joined
by Mark Curtis - Evangelist, Gavin Carr - Christus, Nina
Bennet, Emily Bauer Jones, Robin Tritschler and Stephen
Wells.
Tickets £15 (full time students £10) will be available
in Tourist Information Centre (Tunsgate, Guildford), Record
Corner (Godalming), Information Centre, Woking, or ring
01483 425 257.
