ELSTEAD
AFTERNOON
W.I.
Mr. Hazeldine held the full attention of all the members at
the March meeting of Elstead Afternoon W.I. during his talk
on "The Work of a Magistrate". The roll of a Magistrate,
or Justice of the Peace, was first established in 1195 to
`keep the King's peace' and became nationwide
law in England by 1327.
To become a Magistrate, a person does not need any legal background,
must be under 60 years of age, and must not be a member of
the Armed Forces or the Police. Relevant training is undertaken
when an appointment is confirmed. The Court Clerk advises
on the Law and a J.P. makes judgement on the available facts.
Two case studies were considered by the members, who had a
lively discussion on the pros and cons of the information
before them. It was a difficult task arriving at a fair and
just decision, which illustrated very well the qualities of
judgement required by a Magistrate. On behalf of all the members,
a vote of thanks to Mr. Hazeldine was proposed by Betty Moxon.
The business part of the meeting included welcoming Marie
Courtney as a new member, congratulating Dorothy Miles on
her 90th birthday on 15th March, and
wishing Dorothy Eade , our most senior member, a speedy recovery
from her stay in Hospital. Margaret Welsted was wished good
luck with the entry in a recent national competition, of her
painting "Portrait of our Queen".
The competition for Leek Soup was won by Diana Terry, and
tea was provided by Mesdames C. Welland, D. Terry, M. Copland
and M. Lees.
PLEASE NOTE that the NEXT MEETING will be on 13th
APRIL when Seale Nurseries will demonstrate arranging flowers
in a Hanging Basket. There will be an Art Club meeting on
6th April and a Walk on Friday 7th April
at 10.30 am. The Farnham Group Meeting is on 18th
April at 7.30 pm.
