ELSTEAD VILLAGE PANCAKE RACE 2006

A big thank you to everyone who supported this Year's pancake race, generously sponsored again by A. J. Tracy. After the rain and snow earlier in the week, we were lucky to have the sun shine for us, and over 70 runners took part. The races were started this year by Mark Smith the new deputy headteacher at St James School and he also presented the prizes

This year's winners were 3 - 5 years Luke Wetton; 6 - 10 years Murray Greenan, 11 - 14 years Oliver Millward. There were a number of runners in the adult race, notably 5 nuns who were advertising the school's Sound of Music singalong in the Village Hall on 25th March. However, the habits must have impeded their running for Darren Gadsby was the adult winner. In the Village Hall afterwards Ruth Lassiter as Tigger and Isabelle Hancock as a Christmas Tree won the junior fancy dress prizes, with Lisa O'Donnell wearing some curtains as Liesel from the Sound of Music winning the adult fancy dress competition. MC Peter Waddell carefully explained the rules for the pancake tossing competition and we had two winners: Fred Schulp for the under 7s and Oliver Millward in the 8 and over category.

Many thanks to all those who helped on the day. This is a village event and we rely on the support of so many to make the event a success. We are most grateful Peter Muir who donated all the wine and to Heidi Jones from Swiss farm who provided the daffodils which help to make the hall look so cheerful. Many thanks must also go to all the generous donations for the raffle from local people and businesses. We took over £500 on the day and sponsor money is still coming in although we do not yet know who will be the top sponsor. The money collected will be shared between Elstead Youth Centre and the charity nominated by the top sponsor. I hope to report the final figure raised and the chosen charity in next months magazine.
