The speaker for the August meeting was Maurice Sellwood who
gave us a talk on 'Trees and Shrubs in a Small Garden'.
He showed us many slides of exotic and colourful trees in
blossom and some different leaf shapes, a touch of the unusual
that could be grown in a small garden. Beautiful flowering
shrubs of different hues, and climbers, using the background
of trees as support gave us an idea of what could be achieved
with height in the border. Many of the trees and plants shown
were taken in municipal gardens, suburbs and roadside verges,
mostly in the Epsom and Ewell Borough. Some species shown
were of foreign origin but have survived the test of time
showing that they are hardy enough to be grown in this country.
Members were issued with the second Elstead Garden Club news
letter which is proving to be popular. The chairman reported
that the new advertising boards made by Brian Wilkins were
stolen from the Milford Road before the summer show. Who would
do such a thing?
The torrential rain on Sunday 13th August was a
blessed relief to all gardeners (even though it did put paid
to our grandsons garden party) and will surely give a much
needed boost to flowers, shrubs, fruit and vegetables.
The Autumn show is on 23rd September. please help
to make this event as good as the summer show by entering
something and by coming to look at all of our efforts.
The next meeting is on 11th September at 7.45 pm
at the URC Hall When Susan Holmes will be talking about
'Plant Hunting for Kew' and her adventures in East
Africa. An event not to be missed. Visitors will be welcome.
