The
Chairman Denis Holmes reported that the Autumn show was a
Great success with over 200 entries. This was remarkable,
he said with such difficult growing conditions. The winners
of the Potato competition was 1st Brian Deaville
and 2nd May Deaville The 3rd winner
was Joyce Baker.
The speaker Geoff Lunn is an amateur photographer specialising
in Natural History. He delighted the audience with his wonderful
collection of wild life slides, mainly birds. Some of the
Photographs had taken many hours of patience to achieve. He
told us of a young Green Woodpecker that was found after it
had fallen from a nest and he successfully hand reared it
on dog food. The young bird had to be fed every twenty minutes
and so he had to take it to work with him where it sat on
his shoulder while he did his office work. It was released
back into the wild and Geoff was able to take a photo of the
bird in Spring when it had reared young of its own.
Another story was of a mouse found in His local British Legion,
it had been pilfering notes of money from the till. Then one
was discovered under a floor board. Geoff managed to catch
the offender in a humane trap, baiting it with a fruit and
nut bar of chocolate, before releasing it some distance away.
He was thanked for his splendid talk by the Chairman.
The next meeting will be on Monday 13th November.
This will be our AGM. There will also be an opportunity to
put any `Gardeners Questions' to our resident garden
experts who will try to help. This is very interesting and
not to be missed.
