THE STORY BEHIND THE POPPY APPEAL:

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the First World War ended. Civilians wanted to remember the people who had given their lives for peace and freedom. An American War Secretary, Moina Michael, inspired by John McCrae's poem, began selling poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-Service community. And so the tradition began.

Raising money through poppies is an easy way to do your bit for those who have served and are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. The money you raise will go towards supporting those who have been prepared to make a personal sacrifice through serving in the British Armed Forces.

ELSTEAD EVENING WI.
Report on meeting held on Tuesday 3rd October

On the occasion of the Evening WI's 32nd Birthday members were welcomed by May Deaville President and wished us all a happy evening.  Apologies were given for absent members and the evening began with worries  concerning the talk of closure of the Royal Surrey Hospital A&E department and what it would mean for all of us. One member claimed that the Parkinson's Clinic had already transferred to Farnham Hospital.

We then enjoyed a finger buffet brought along by members and the raffle was drawn,. May then announced  Ann Chandler as winner of a" A Handmade Birthday Card" Competition.

Owing to many people being reluctant to venture out after dark we are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit new members and we  discussed the future of our group in depth. We have been a happy group and feel very sad that we can no longer carry on. After taking a vote we came to the decision that we should amalgamate with the afternoon WI. in the new Year.

Activities this month include an Art Exhibition on the 10th at King Edwards School at Wormley, and walkers meet at Cut Mill pond for a walk around Puttenham Common and lunch at the Barley Mow Sands. November 10th walkers meet at Truxford Dropping Zone at 10.45, Lunch at the Woolpack Elstead.

Next Meeting November 7th AGM.
Competition - A Decorative Tea Towel.
