Despite
the cooler weather the tennis courts are still very busy,
with the Tuesday ladies morning still very popular.
Regular players are keen to sign up straight away for
their favourite time when the weekly booking sheet is put
up on a Saturday morning. When then the two new courts
are built this should relieve such pressure early on a Saturday
morning.
October marks the start of the winter Surrey postal competitions.
This competition has categories for all age groups from under
10's to over 60's. In the past Elstead has had
a lot of success with Barbara Awbery and Lynn Wright reaching
the final of the over 40's doubles and the juniors producing
two winners at under 14 level in Dougie Barker and Gwilym
Flint Roberts. Gwilym broke his ankle at the end of
September, and has only just started playing again.
He plays the first round of this years singles on 12th November,
and we wish him the best of luck.
Will Burden has now played 2 matches for Surrey - against
Sussex and Middlesex. We also must not forget the more
senior members of the club as Richard Harrington also played
for Surrey this year, but in the over 60 category. tennis
really is a game for all ages!
Last month Elstead held a challenge match between coach Rachel
Magory (5 foot 2) and mens champion Dougie Barker (5 foot
10). Rachel has played to a very high standard, and
in her prime reached a national ranking of 17. However
none of us had seen her play in a competitive situation.
The match was well balanced with Dougie hitting the ball harder,
but Rachel being more accurate. It was competitive and
a delight to watch such high class tennis being played at
our club. The winner was Rachel, who always seemed to
manage to get one more ball back in the court, with a score
of 6 -2, 6 - 3.
