NEWS FROM ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL

We are sorry that Caroline Chandler has resigned from the Council for personal reasons - she has contributed much to the activity of the Council especially her work on the recreational grounds sub committee. Austin Playfoot will take over  responsibility for highways.

At the request of the Parish Council I have contacted PC Raine again to request that the Interactive Speed Sign should be operated in Elstead. He will be surveying for a suitable location in either Farnham Rd or Thursley Rd.

Elstead Football Club have been granted planning approval for temporary lighting at Burford Lodge Recreation Ground for training purposes in the evening. Installation of the equipment has begun but the Council is conducting further discussions with the Club on the siting and on the position of the main football pitch which has to fit in with the planned new tennis courts.

The Council has objected to the planning application for a telecommunication mast at Thundry Farm

The Council has written to Waverley Borough Council to point out that over 50 dwellings have been built in Elstead over the last ten years but none of these have been the subject of Section 106 agreements providing funds for the improvement of local infrastructure. A reply has been received which recognises that there is a case for examination where there is a cumulative number of small developments as opposed to a large housing development but policy is still being worked out based on new government guidelines.

The pavement and highway at the Village Green in front of the shops is continually strewn with litter, silt and debris which spoils the appearance of this special area. Waverley BC have now agreed to clean and inspect on a weekly basis - we hope there is a big improvement here.

The November Parish Council meeting was cancelled. The next meeting is on 4th December

OLDIES' NOW OUTNUMBER CHILDREN

This is the end of an era: from next year pensioners will outnumber children under the age of 16, according to Age Concern.

By 2031, those above the age for state pension will exceed children by almost four million.

The change has resulted from two trends: a fall in the birth rate, and an increase in longevity, both of which means that the population as a whole is ageing.

At present there are about 12 million people over 60 in the UK. This is about one in five of the population. But by 2030 this could rise to 19 million, or about a third of the population.
