Dear
Friends,
This last year Thursley has twice hosted the recording of
`Gardeners' Question Time` - the second programme
is going out at New Year - but how many of you have been to
a `Christian Question Time`?
In Elstead, the Churches have got together to host just such
an event during Christian Unity Week. You are invited
to come along to the United Reformed Church, Milford Road,
Elstead, for 'Christian Question Time' on Wednesday 24th
January - 7.30 pm to 9 pm - when a panel of invited speakers
(one from each denomination: Church of England, Roman Catholic
and United Reformed) will answer your questions.
So start thinking what you would like to know. It might
be something topical; there are plenty of religious items
in the news at the moment ! It might be something that's
been bothering you since you went to Sunday School.
It could be moral, `theological`, or practical; provocative
or entertaining. Just don't ask about potting up
geraniums !
We would like to have your questions in advance, please, so
that we can prime the panel and our independent (Church of
Scotland!) Chairman, Lord Strathalmond, can put them into
some order. So post or email them to me, or just drop
them round to the Rectory.
It will be an excellent opportunity to get an ecumenical perspective
on the topic of your choice, or just to listen to what our
visitors have to say about others' questions. There
is no charge, and refreshments will be available.

Other good news for a new year: Elstead School has now
got its building programme under way (as of 18th December),
and work on the two new classrooms, new staffroom and office
space should be complete by mid-June. We are still raising
the money to pay for it... We call the appeal "Target
50k", although the actual target is rather larger than
that as we had some funds in reserve beforehand. Children
now come to the school from surrounding villages, and as our
numbers continue to rise the new classrooms come only just
in time !
After Thursley church's refurbishment last year, it is
now Elstead's turn for some internal enhancement, and
we shall shortly be having the chancel redecorated and recarpeted;
the main item, however, will be the replacement of the old
curtains round the east end with some very carefully designed
(by David Oakley) new panelling, which will look much better
and help to lighten the east end of the church.
A very Happy New Year to you all !
William
Lang.
