ELSTEAD
AFTERNOON
WI
Meeting
on 7th December
The Elstead Afternoon WI Christmas meeting was held in a
packed Village Hall with a large number of members and guests
from other WI's - Farnham, The Bourne, Seal and Sands,
Millbridge, Wrecclesham, Hale and Ockford. President Anne
Moon welcomed everyone, especially guests and new members
Betty Fields, Barbara Hardy, Jennifer Hearn, Joan Tilson
and Jenny Tapp. Members were also delighted to see Dorothy
Eade back among them after her spell in hospital. Maud Butler
had written to us from South Africa, and Betty Ellis was
recovering after a car accident.
Anne also introduced the new Committee to members and outlined
their duties. The WI Christmas Lunch would be held in the
Village Hall on 15th December at 12.30 for 1
pm, and the meal would be followed by an entertainment from
the drama group, making it a very special occasion. Many
of the WI activities were now complete for the year, although
the book group was meeting for its Christmas lunch on 11th
December, and the last swim before Christmas was to be December
19th. Members were invited to think about what
charity they would like to support next year - suggestions
so far included the Springfield Surgery patient support
group, St James' school, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice
and the Milford Day Centre. Members would be able to vote
on the full list in January. The competition, a home-made
Christmas Cracker, was won by Renee Clark.
The afternoon's entertainment was provided by Ann Chance
who gave a "musical extravaganza" - a wonderful
selection of songs, stories and jokes that made the afternoon
fly by in laughter and song!
This was followed by a delicious tea provided by the Committee.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday 4th January
2007 at 2.15 pm when the subject will be "A Lakeland
Miscellany" by Rosemary Hunter, and the competition
"a New Year Poem".

EXCITING
NEWS
FOR
COMMUNITY
GROUPS
AND
ORGANISATIONS
IN
WAVERLEY
One thing that Waverley borough is not short of is voluntary
and community groups who make a vast contribution to their
local area. There are at least 450 such groups delivering
key services and providing care and support to members of
the community in Waverley alone. However, there does remain
a significant gap in the level of support and advice that
these groups and organisations receive when they face problems
and issues affecting their work. This is why a new, single
and unified Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) is planned
for the boroughs of Guildford and Waverley. It will provide
support, training and advice on anything from where to find
funding to how to recycle old furniture. It will be available
for all community groups and organisations within South West
Surrey whatever their size or activity.
Two project officers have been appointed, Jess Hogan &
Anna Knights, to work alongside key partners on this project.
Jess Hogan reported that 'The idea of a new CVS has been really
well received by all of the key organisations in Waverley;
we are absolutely delighted to have received such a warm response'.
The new CVS will integrate the existing services provided
by Guildford Association of Voluntary Service (GAVS), Farnham
Voluntary Service Council and Haslemere and District Volunteer
Bureau. Jess and Anna have already been busy sending out surveys
to local organisations and groups to let them have their say
about how the CVS will develop. If you know of any local groups
or organisations who have not received the survey, or you
would like to know more about the project, please do hesitate
to contact Jess or Anna on 01483 504626 or by email: j.hogan@gavs.org.uk
or a.knights@gavs.org.uk
