ELSTEAD AFTERNOON WI.
Anne Moon welcomed members and guests to the February meeting. The W.I. are very pleased to see an increase in new members, but will monitor the numbers so that they do not exceed 100. When that target is reached a waiting list will be started. The first fundraising event of the year, a Coffee morning, will take place on Tuesday 13th February 10.30 - noon at the President's home, all are welcome. Our chosen charity is Springfield Surgery Patients Group who require equipment. The W.I. will be entering the national competition for the best W.I. and will be busy preparing for that event which will take place at the beginning of next year. The Bowls, Swimming and Discussion groups would welcome new members. We are a lively group with plenty going on during the month. A coach trip is proposed to visit the W.I. training college on Sunday 15th July. Names are now being taken with a closing date of 5th April.
Dr Samways, who began her career as a GP serving the Haslemere area then gave an enlightening and amusing talk called "I'm a Patient - Get Me Out of Here!" Having become disenchanted with the nightly callouts, Dr Samways changed from the NHS to private care specializing in dealing with addictive diseases. She covered the aspects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, with diets to help counteract it, especially the Hay diet that avoids carbohydrates and protein at the same meal. We were advised to look at the food content in processed foods on offer at the Supermarket checking origin and ingredients. Antibiotics used in intensive farming of animals for meat consumption should be avoided. Organic and locally sourced foods are best. Knowing what you want when visiting the Doctor helps to achieve a prescription that is best suited to your needs. Questions were then invited from the audience. We discussed the benefits of making your own bread, water filters, use of sweeteners if you are diabetic, use of low saturate margarines. Peggy Tilly thanked the speaker.
The raffle was then drawn and the Competition winner for a homemade Get Well Card was awarded to Ursula Dunlop. The next meeting will take place on Thursday 1st March at 2.15 pm in the Village Hall when Mr Read will be speaking on "A Pot Pourri of Antiques" and the competition will be Bring your Favourite Antique.
