ELSTEAD AFTERNOON WI. MEETING
1st March 2007

President Anne Moon told a full village hall that the year's charity fundraising had started well with £112 raised at her coffee morning, and invited members to come up with new fundraising ideas; for example the art and craft group would be holding an exhibition in September. We were very lucky in having such a busy and successful Wl, but this did mean that the main Wl meetings were becoming very large. An extra meeting for quiet discussion had been arranged for senior members on March 14th in the URC Hall. Members were encouraged to put their names down for the visit to the Denman College Open Day on 15th July.

The meeting discussed the possible closure of the Royal Surrey County Hospital and members were encouraged to write to the local MP, Jeremy Hunt, and or to the Chair of the PCT with their views. The meeting also discussed a resolution from Thames Ditton Wl about allergy testing.

The speaker for the afternoon was Mr Read who had brought a pot pourri of antiques. He kept the meeting entertained with a selection of interesting antiques and objets d'art with stories to match. Members were invited to identify a pressed block of tea, and to date and place two antique clocks. Jean Cherriman proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by the usual excellent tea!

The next meeting is on Thursday 5th April when Mrs Lock will be telling us how to make and decorate novelty Easter eggs.

The Meeting held on 8th March, had as it's guest Speaker, Canon Peter Bruinvels, the R.B.L. County Field Officer.   It was a very amusing and informative talk, covering a wide range of welfare work for the 'needy' in the Surrey area, considered by some to be a very affluent region, but in some cases, quite the reverse. We were told of payments made by the R.B.L. on applications for items as diverse as T.V. Licenses and Stair Lifts, and of Holidays available at 2 venues in the U.K.

It was a very interesting talk, followed by tea and cake, after which Canon Bruinvels gave out two leaflets to each Member present, covering monies received for the Poppy Appeal, and services supplied by 'Poppy Direct' for Motor (including Break down Cover) Home, Private Medical, Travel and Pet Insurance.

A day trip is being arranged to the Poppy Factory on Thursday, 13th September, (lunch can be ordered in advance) and if we can fill a 49 seater coach, the cost will be £6 per head.   If you are interested please contact Sandra on 702050.

The next Meeting will be on Thursday, 12th April, the Speaker being Keith Pearce, on Gardens, please come along and join us, any new members will be very welcome.
