TRAIDCRAFT

We are in the middle of Fair-Trade Fortnight as I write.  Fair-Trade has been given much more publicity this year than ever before.  With our 2500 products now carrying the FAIR-TRADE mark, there's never been a wider choice of products to tell people about.

There was a time the voluntary Fair-Traders for Traidcraft thought they were working themselves out of a job but we have been told our role continues to be vitally important.

For the last 27 years Traidcraft has been working in India with the producers of Agrocel, helping to achieve the required standard to produce the market and export cotton in the sort of quantities required by Marks & Spencer.  Marks & Spencer will use their cotton in the 20million garments on a role in their stores from the end of March.  Agrocel is Traidcraft's project partner in the Kutch region of Western India.

The charity side of Traidcraft continues to work and advise small producers of the quality and quantity required to market their products at home and abroad.  If you look in the catalogue there is a list of countries and producers that Traidcraft helps.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 13-19 MAY 2007
GROWTH FOR POOR COMMUNITIES

In Elstead we are surrounded by beautiful trees on the commons and in our gardens.  It is hard to imagine living where there are no trees only parched cracked earth.

The desert is advancing in Northern Senegal; many of the areas of the once-lush landscape are now barren, cracked and dry.  There are few trees or plants and life is a struggle.  Here, there is no escaping from how essential water is.  It's needed provide refreshment' to make the ground fertile again; to bring life.

Mairam is excited as she goes to a neighbouring village in Northern Senegal, to take part in a tree planting seminar run by Christian Aid partner U.S.E.  She's been trained to show her neighbours how planting fruit saplings will give them a better diet and fruit to sell and will also help regenerate their area which has become desert.  To her, trees symbolise a whole new life.

We need more collectors to raise enough money for more mango saplings.  Could you spare a couple of hours in Christian Aid week to provide 50 trees or another life-transforming gift?
