ELSTEAD VILLAGE PANCAKE RACE 2007

Thank you to everyone who supported the Elstead Village Pancake Race in February and to the team of helpers who contributed so much to make it a success. We were lucky that it kept fine for the races and about 50 runners took part. Several of the adults gamely dressed up as characters from Grease to publicise St James School Target 50K's forthcoming singalonga/dancealonga Grease evening.

Winners of the races were:  3-5 years  James McCully; 6-10 years  Daniel Mallinder; 11-14 years  Oli Millward. The adult race was won by Darren Ungless. Their names will be engraved on the Woolpack Shield which will be displayed for the rest of the year in The Woolpack pub.

About 150 people continued the fun in the Village Hall where filled pancakes were on sale with a glass of wine. We, just about, had enough pancakes although we sold those we were saving for the tossing competition and competitors had to share the few pancakes we had left from the races! We shall have to make more next year! The two winners of the pancake tossing competition were Pippa Schulp and Jevon Napper and they were presented with the large wooden spoon on which their names will be engraved.

There were many entries for the fancy dress competition: George Samarawala won the under 8 heat as a shepherd; Isabelle Hancock won the over 8 heat as a snowman; Will Spencer won the adult heat as Sandy from Grease. The top sponsor this year was Paul Judge who has nominated Target 50K as his charity.  The total raised was £682.92 which after costs left £550 to be shared between Elstead Youth Centre and Target 50K. We are indebted again to A. J. Tracy who sponsored this year's races and to the many local businesses and individuals who provided the raffle prizes; Peter Muir of Cellarworld who donated the wine and Heidi from Swiss Farm who gave us the beautiful daffodils which made the hall look so spring-like; Mark Smith, Deputy Headteacher of St James who started the races and Peter Wadell who did a sterling job as Master of Ceremonies in the Village Hall.

ELSTEAD AFTERNOON WI MEETING REPORT
Thursday 5th April 2007

Anne Moon welcomed members to a packed village hall for the Easter meeting. However she began on a sad note, asking for a minute's silence in memory of Dorothy Miles, a member for many years and a former Treasurer and committee member, whose funeral had been held that morning. Following discussions with senior members the hall had been arranged differently to enable members to sit more comfortably at tea-time, and to see the seasonal demonstration more easily.

There were lots of things happening over the next few months - a coffee morning at Jill Stewart's, a fashion evening and a cream tea in June and a jacket potato lunch in July as well as a visit to Denman College. In the meantime we were working on our portfolio for best WI! Anne also reported on the Annual Council Meeting in Dorking where there had been talks from the RSPB, Ruth Bond from the public affairs department at headquarters and Chris Martin, a young man who after rowing across the Atlantic was now planning a trip across the Pacific.

Mrs Lock gave a splendid demonstration of how to make and decorate Easter eggs. She showed us how to make the hollow chocolate eggs and then effortlessly transformed some she had done earlier into a frog, complete with big eyes and a pink tongue, another half egg into a smart tortoise and finally a beautiful egg decorated with flowers and leaves. Eve Hall gave a warmly supported vote of thanks, and members were able to take home these eggs as raffle prizes. The competition for the best decorated egg was won by Jill Stewart.

The next meeting on May 3rd. This will be our annual resolutions meeting and would also be when we would take lots of photos for the WI portfolio.
