NEWS FROM ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL

This is the last news report of the present Parish Council as the next Council will be elected on the 3rd May. At the time of writing we know that there are nine candidates for nine positions on the Council and this means that there will not be a formal election by public vote. The vote for two Borough Councillors will take place, of course, in the normal way.

Two of our present Parish Councillors are standing down - Nancie Mitchell and Austin Playfoot . Nancie has served on the council for many years and chaired the recreation ground sub-committee. Austin also served for many years and was our representative on the Village Halls Committee and was responsible for the very successful Village Spring Clean Day. Many thanks to them both for their strong commitment to village affairs.

On the last Saturday in March we had a really good turnout for the Village Spring Clean Day - thanks to everyone who worked through the village especially the children - what a difference it makes !

Tony Cheeseman, our Village Handyman, has retired. Tony has carried out an amazing amount of work since his appointment in September 2005 including the building of bench seats for both recreation Grounds and the cemetery from wood rescued from the demolition of the old pavilion. Thanks a lot Tony for all you have done.

The Annual Parish Council Meeting is on Monday 21st May.

GOOD COMPANIONS

Once again the snow covered the ground on awakening, but by the time our meeting began it had gone.

There was a good attendance, Freda Announced sick members we wish them a speedy recovery.

Our speaker was introduced Mrs Wetton a local airline pilot. She is a a Senior First Officer and flies for British Airways and is accompanied with the captain in the cockpit. Her father was an aircraft member. There was strict training she had A level degree and sponsorship and flies B777. British Airways employs 49000 people including 15000 cabin crew, 3300 pilots - some lady.

Here husband is a pilot and the work is juggled between motherhood as there are two children ages 5 and 7. Our pilot had four years leave and is working part time. There is quite a timetable before flying checking charts route and weather. So many countries to travel. The farthest destination for Heathrow is Sydney.

Betty gave a vote of thanks to the speaker.
