(A monthly piece from Elstead Cricket Club)

It has to be said - the 2007 season has not taken off as we might have wished! With a third of the games gone the 1st X1 is yet to record a league win and the club languishes at the bottom of I'Anson Division One. It's been a sorry chapter of non-availability of some key players, of dropped catches and a batting line-up which has consistently failed to score sufficient runs. I don't need to dwell on the situation - suffice to say we've all been there and we WILL bounce back.

In the Stevens Cup it's been a different story. A fabulous example of taking the singles, sharp running between the wickets, and generally confident attacking batting saw the lads post a 120+ total at Puttenham. Tight bowling from Josh Berry, Mark Wycherley, Fazal Syed and David Tye combined with some really sparky fielding saw to it that Puttenham never got a sniff. You see, we can do it!

So to Chiddingfold in the next round and a spanking 35 from David Tye and quickfire 36 from Owais saw our boys post a stunning 156 for 5 in 16 overs. More tight bowling from the usual quartet on Chiddingfold's small ground ensured the home side were never in with a shout. Just watch morale go up now!

The Twos have continued to consolidate with three wins under their belt (and a losing draw). Skipper, Richard Jones, continues to score plenty of runs - the side certainly performs much better when he does - and, if he's honest, he'd have taken the current mid-table position in Division Three at the start of the campaign.

Highlight of the season so far? Well, two, I guess! Aside from the Stevens Cup victories the high point for the Ones was the vast swarm of bees that descended on the recreation ground and passed slowly across to Beacon View Road during the match against Puttenham, causing the players to scurry to all corners to take cover. Just as the match was back into its stride the bees, having doubtless taken tea with some friends, eased their way slowly back across the pitch causing yet more avoidance tactics from the players. Our cricket may be something of a 'B' movie at the moment but the local insect population didn't have to provide such graphic evidence (groan!).

The other highlight? That honour goes to the Under 13s. All the junior teams have had a great season so far, winning far more games than they have lost. Pick of the bunch, though, has to be the Under 13s who posted a staggering 168 for 4 off 20 overs against Churt, this after the visitors had been informed that Elstead were a much better bowling side than batting. Just to prove the point the home side then bowled out Churt for just 48! What a cracking win!

By the time you read this our very own Jonah (Richard Jones) will have attempted to cross the English Channel in a two-man kayak. I know he's fairly fit and has run the New York Marathon in the past but it seems to me that a complete novice with just two training sessions under his belt really is seriously under-prepared for such a monumental challenge. Still, he's doing it in aid of charity (Cancer UK) so if you feel like supporting him go to the following link - http://www.justgiving.com/channelkayak.
