The Meeting on the 14th June had as it's guest
speaker, Laura Ashton the County Standard Bearer, who in 2005
went on a 10 day trip with Remembrance Travel to Burma, as
the Standard Bearer, for the laying of the wreaths at the
tombs for the fallen.
The flight lasted 10 hours, the plane landing at Bangkok,
where the group flew on to Rangoon and had a guided tour of
the 'old' town, visiting the major pergola which was
in the process of being re-gilded requiring bamboo scaffolding
and many workers, and was surrounded by dozens of smaller
pergolas.
She and her companions, many of them Burma veterans and their
relatives, of veterans next visited Mandalay where from the
hill shrines breathtaking panoramic views and striking sunsets
can be enjoyed. At Mingun Laura was pictured standing
within a giant 90 ton bell, all that we could see of her were
her legs and feet.
The laying of the wreaths at the tombs and a service at the
Cathedral took place on the last day, and the pilgrimage was
rounded off by a dinner at the British Embassy It was obviously
a trip tinged by sadness but one that was also unforgettable
Names are being collected for the Mystery Trip on September
13th, leaving the Legion at 10.30 am and returning at approximately
4 pm.
The next Meeting will be on July 12th and will
be a talk will be given by the PDSA New Members are very welcome,
Mary
