ELSTEAD AFTERNOON WI

WI members gathered in Barbara and Terry Broome's lovely garden for their June meeting which was a delicious and very sociable cream tea. Anne Moon thanked the Broome's for their hospitality, and celebrated Marjorie Noble's 94th birthday and Di Balchin's golden wedding.  Dee Beeson and the craft group had been asked to paint the new sign for the Woolpack who are currently carrying out refurbishments. Jill Stewart's coffee morning had raised £133.50. Members were reminded about the forthcoming fashion evening in Shere, and the Jacket Potato lunch on July 10. Cakes would be required for the cake stall at Elstead Marathon on 6th July.

Betty Moxon then reported on the national WI AGM  in the Albert Hall which she and Venetia Pierce had attended the day before. Nationally and locally the WI was flourishing. And it had been a lively day with 3 very different speakers as well as the WI's own business reports. Baroness Heyman, the Lord Speaker, spoke on the new role of the House of Lords, Stuart Rose on the WI's new carbon challenge and what M&S were doing to reduce their carbon footprint, and Alan Cook of the Post Office about how they were undertaking reducing the network of rural post offices. It ended not just with Jerusalem but with Tony Christie singing " the way to Amarillo". After the report members then enjoyed the splendid cream tea.

The next meeting of the WI is back in the Village Hall on the 5th July with a change to the scheduled programme - Mr Croucher will be talking about Wisley, and the competition will be a favourite holiday souvenir.

NEWS FROM ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL

At the Annual Parish Council Meeting, Denis Holmes was elected Chairman and Richard Terry was elected Vice Chairman. We welcomed the new Councillors Anne Thomas, Sally Place and Bryn Morgan; All the sub-committees and responsibilities were agreed and are separately listed.

Arnold Beaton our Tree Warden has notified us of his wish to retire from the post which he has undertaken so well for us. The major survey of our trees which he carried out soon after taking on the job will continue to be our guide - many thanks go to Arnold for his work for the Council.

We were pleased to award a grant to "Help In Elstead" to assist with the excellent work that they perform in the village.

We have continued our research into new play equipment for Burford Lodge Rec Ground Play area and, as we are most impressed with a frame currently in Farnborough supplied by Kompan Ltd, we have decided to go ahead with this project.

If successful then additional smaller pieces of equipment can be added later.

Richard Terry was nominated by the Council for the Waverley Standards Board.

Mr Holmes and Mr Jeffery joined Simon Hall the SCC Area Highway Engineer for a survey of the village to obtain a view of the current traffic problems in Elstead and where best the Highways Department can concentrate funds towards solutions. It is certain that funds have been earmarked in the Highways budget but not enough for any major scheme as planned some years ago. The full Council Meeting will have to get to grips with the latest ideas - for example using Vehicle Re-active signs - at a special meeting with the Highway Engineer.

The new Community Policeman for Elstead is PC Damion Berridge - telephone 0845 1252222 replacing PC Sam Barnett. He will cover a new combination of villages - Elstead, Tilford, Thursley,Churt, Frensham and Dockenfield.
