Dear Friends,

The wonders of the English `summer` have meant that the Anniversary Event planned by Surrey's emergency services to commemorate the Thursley Common Fire of July 2006 was not so much rained-off as washed away !  [It is intended to hold it in September now, as a `not the anniversary` event, but no date has been set as we go to press].

Also in September, there will be an extraordinary theatrical event to raise money for a local `common-fire support group`, featuring a variety of local acting talent (and me, but then you can't have everything !) - a not-to-be-missed event...  written by a local playwright, in the vogue of 'Last of the Summer Wine', it will be at Thursley Village Hall on the evening of Friday 22nd September.  Tickets at £10 each can be obtained from Helena Francis - 01252-703216.  Further details of this event can also be obtained from "The Three Horse Shoes".

Both of the above are intended for Elstead folk as well as Thursley, as the Common Fire was definitely a 'joint event'.

And talking of acting talent...  it looks as if I shall be producing a pantomime again this Christmas: if you would like to be involved, on or off the stage, I would be delighted to hear from you.

The heavy rains have disrupted quite a few events, both locally and nationally, and caused travel chaos on one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year (not difficult, I know) - just when it seems that everybody is jetting off to the sun - so I was interested to discover, when I asked the children of St. James' School at their end-of-term service, that probably as many of them would be spending the summer holidays at home as would be going away (never mind `abroad`).  I wonder how many families will make use of the wonderful natural surroundings that we have here for walks, games, picnics and nature rambles during the holidays ?  I hope that many will, but so often we all seem to overlook what is on our doorstep when we are thinking of having a day out.  Do think about it - that is, of course, if it ever stops raining !

During August we shall be sharing several services between our two churches, so please take care when setting out on a Sunday... and take the opportunity to visit `that other church` if you would not normally do so.  I shall be taking the opportunity - since I could conceivably, therefore, be seeing the same faces three or four weeks running (!) - to put together a little `sermon series` in preparation for a nation-wide event at the end of September: "Back to Church Sunday".  This is intended as a day when all those who go to church regularly should invite one or two friends or neighbours to join them, so start thinking about who you will invite (if you already come to church) or else put the date in your diary (30th September) and come anyway - we look forward to welcoming you !

William Lang.
