ELSTEAD
VILLAGE
HALL
The last month has been very eventful for the Village Hall.
August started with the shock discovery that a lot of lead
had been stolen from the Village Hall roof, allowing water
to leak in through a light fitting in the heavy rains that
occurred. The extensive repairs needed have still not
been completed.
Then, in a separate incident two weeks later, vandals broke
into the Hall smashing three windows and letting off two fire
extinguishers inside. Our thanks go to the passers by
who noticed the broken windows and reported the break in to
the police.
These two events were sad forerunners to the Bridge Evening
that took place on 8th September to raise funds towards the
extensive redecoration programme planned for the Village Hall
and Youth Centre, where a target of £20,000 is needed to redecorate
both buildings and carry out repairs.
The Bridge evening was very successful and received marvellous
support from the village. The Hall was filled to capacity
with 19 tables, creating a daunting task for Joanna Manches
to provide 76 meals, possible only with fantastic help from
Venetia Pierce, Anne Moon and Pam Duke who worked their hearts
out the whole evening. Those attending were welcomed
with a free glass of wine and then settled down to a 2-course
salmon dinner (thanks to Patti Pearce for making the salad),
before the card playing started in earnest.
John Manches (Treasurer of the Village Hall) had the easiest
job as front of house, Peter Moon (Vice Chairman) and Mick
Duke ran the bar, while Keith Pierce did a magnificent job
on the raffle which raised £200 towards the evening, and which
was very well supported by both individuals and organisations
that use the Village Hall. Particular thanks go to the
many traders in Elstead Village who gave much appreciated
support to the evening by donating raffle prizes.
With the help of donations also received from some of the
Village Hall users, the evening raised a total of £1,270 towards
the Village Hall's funds. "Never again", said Joanna
when the team got off its knees at the end. We'll see!
