What
a joyful lecture we had about bulbs! So apt because they have
a habit of leaping up suddenly and surprising one with
their beauty. Mr J Negus was an enthusiast and spoke
with a lively humour about his subject.
Most bulbs should be planted deeply, at about 3 times their
height; if in pots, together with slow water release gel and
slow release fertilizer. Later when the flowers are
over but the plants are still in full growth they should again
be fed so that they may perform well the following year.
Mr Negus showed us many excellent slides of unusual plants,
tempting us to experiment. He gave selected information
about individual bulbs, dealing with those suitable for alpine
houses, patio pots, window sills, woodlands and grass, incidentally
mentioning specialist nurseries, such as Broadleigh, where
these beauties may be purchased and open gardens where they
may be enjoyed in situ.
The evening concluded with a merry quiz where those with the
relevant knowledge shouted out answers and were rewarded with
packets of seeds, Fun! A happy evening.
Next meeting 8th October, Mrs M. Lennard: All about the Honey
Bee.
