THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
ELSTEAD BRANCH

On Sunday 30th September 2007, 16 Standards formed up at the Branch Headquarters for the ceremony at St James Church for the Laying up of the old Standard and the Dedication of the new Standard.

The Parade Marshall moved the parade off to the sound of the drums, provided by The Sea Cadet Corps, to the church where the Standard Bearers took up their positions with their Standard at the end of each pew. The service was officiated by the Rector William Lang, to a full church for the congregation to see and hear, a once in a lifetime ceremony of the Laying up and Dedication of our Standards. It was a very solemn and moving experience with the buglers sounding the Last Post. Then 2 minutes silence followed by Reveille.

After the service the Parade marched off to the sound of the drums and bugles, returning to Headquarters, for the final act of all the visiting Standards dipping in recognition of the new Elstead Standard, followed by the Elstead Standard dipping in acknowledgement. The Elstead Women's Section laid on a magnificent finger buffet for all to see, savour, and enjoy and was very much appreciated by all.

My thanks go to all who attended the service and to those who gave so much of their time and energy in the preparation and fulfilment.

My thanks also go to the visiting Standard Bearers whose, Standards made the day moving and colourful. Thank you to:-
Surrey County, Surrey County W'oman's Section, Ashtead, Ewell, Camberley, Camberley Woman's Section, Chiddingfold, Chobham, Farnham, Horley, Limpsfield, Limpsfield Woman's Section, Oxted and West Clandon.

The October Meeting held on the 11th had as it's speaker Jean Wheatley of Traidcraft, replacing the advertised speaker, Pat Pierce, who was unable to attend.

Jean gave a very interesting talk covering the many goods that are produced by the member groups of Traidcraft in Africa, who work on tea, coffee and sugar plantations, and construct jewellery and many other decorative items, thereby earning money with which, in many cases, they pay for their children's education.

For those who missed Jean' talk and the Stall there will be another opportunity to see all the goods produced at the URC on Saturday November 3rd from 10 - 12 am.

On Saturday, 17th November, why not come along to the URC and support the PDSA There will be a Stall between 10 am to 12 midday and Soup/Bread will be available at a cost of £1.50 Between 2-4 pm Bingo will be played at a cost of £2 for 10 games. All proceeds will go to the PDSA.

The Meeting next month will be the AGM on November 8th and Betty will be collecting the subscriptions for 2007/8.
