FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
AGED 13 - 19

There is a budget available for young people aged 13-19, as well as practioners working with this age group, to spend on projects which would benefit themselves, their peers and their community. The Government want as many young people as possible to benefit from the Surrey Youth Opportunities Fund and Youth Capital Fund 2007/08.

Both funds must be allocated by March 2008 and the Government is determined that this funding will help young people make a difference.

I ask anyone who fits into this category to think hard about facilities they would like to see in Elstead. For instance, an outdoor table tennis table, basketball equipment for the youth club, more cricket nets, cycle paths, MTB course or a sports/recreational you have seen in another village which you think would work well here.

This is your chance to let Surrey County Council and the government know what you want - make a difference.

Further information about the funding can be found at:
www.surreycc.gov.uk/takeparttakepower
www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/youthmatters/youthfund

Please speak to any councillor if you would like to talk it over - our contact details are in Elstead News or come along to the next council meeting on 13th November. You can ask questions at 8 pm and you don't have to stay after public question time!

Sally Place, Parish Councillor

GOOD COMPANIONS.

Members attended a very interesting meeting after the summer break. Mr Wheatley gave a talk and slides about his Arctic adventure.

He and his wife went to Spitsbergen (Svalbard) just over 500 miles from the North pole., The main town Longyearbyen named after Mr Longyear an American. They travelled on a boat, the Captain was Professor Molchanon with a Russian crew The guide always had a gun at hand as it could be dangerous if the Polar Bears were aggressive.  Rubber boats called Zodiacs ferried them to the mountains as the larger boats were unable to land any closer.

The slides showed the bears enjoying a meal of seals. Reindeer had very large antlers, the Arctic foxes were much bigger than in our country. Walrus have huge Fangs to be able to search below the sea for shell fish. There were also quite a variety of birds, Ivory Gull, Brunnich's Guillemot, Little auk, Grey Phalarope, Barnacle Goose and King Eider Duck. It is amazing how they manage to survive.  Flowers seen include Salbard Poppy, Saxifrages and Lichens. In some places dripping water was wearing away the mountains making them look like caves.

Our thanks to Mr Wheatley there were a lot of remarks saying how much members enjoyed the talk.

We finished with the Raffle and Tea. Hoping the sick members are well now.

The talk at the next meeting will be from Age Concern, and we hope to plan a mystery drive.
