RECYCLING NEWS

Christmas Recycling Reminder:
However hard we try, Christmas is a time of the year which produces more refuse than any other.  Don't forget that wrapping paper (but not the metallic sort) and Christmas cards can go in your kerbside paper box.  Christmas trees can be taken to your nearest Civic Amenity Site and put in with garden refuse.

Bring & Take Morning 2008:
In response to the many requests I have had for another Bring & Take event for Thursley and Elstead, I have booked Thursley Village Hall for the morning of Saturday 15th March, 2008.  Just right for a post Christmas clear-out!

Bulky, Rigid Plastics:
I was very pleased to see, at the end of last year, that Witley Amenity Site now takes bulky, rigid plastics.  This is things like children's sand pits, washing up bowls, kitchen bins, etc. but not  soft flexible plastics.  To my delight I was told that plastic flower pots can go in the skip - I had a collection in my greenhouse from the past 25 years.  It filled five black plastic bin liners!

A Thought for 2008:
Each year households in the UK throw away almost 30 million tonnes of rubbish, the same weight as 4.3 million African Elephants.
Over half of this can be recycled.

AFTERNOON WI.

Elstead Afternoon's W.I Christmas meeting was well attended.  The new President, Betty Moxon welcomed Christine Welland and Betty Fields who were both recovering after a spell in hospital.  Birthday congratulations were given to two members and later on the ladies enjoyed a splendid birthday cake baked especially by one of them, Ann Chandler.  Betty mentioned that Muriel Ragless had had a recipe for Potato Surprise accepted for a new W.I Family Cookbook.

Members were invited to think about what charity they would like to support next year, and put forward ideas in January.  The choice would be made by majority vote.  The competition, a piece of costume jewellery, was won by Audrey Barnes.

Mr Jordon then gave an interesting talk on Old Time Music Hall, accompanied by songs of the 1800's.  He said the spirit of the Music Hall was recreated by the "Good Old Days" television programme, but its origins were as early as the 1830's where patrons were charged the vast sum of 7 shillings per couple.  In the 1880's there were as many as 500 Music Halls in London alone!

The W.I Christmas Lunch will be held in the Village Hall on 17th December at 12.30 pm for 1.00 pm, followed by entertainment from the drama group.  The next W.I meeting is Thursday, 10 January 2008
