SPIRITUAL
ECUMENISM
The desire for unity among Christians is, before all else,
a desire to be kept alive and prayer to be nourished.
This search has its eyes fixed on Jesus, who gave his life
so that there would be ' one flock, one shepherd' [John
10:16] and who prayed 'that they may all be one' [John
17:21]
Spiritual ecumenism is the very heart, the very essence of
the ecumenical movement: ' Spiritual ecumenism is the soul
of the ecumenical movement. Each time we engage in common
prayer, each act of common witness, indeed every act of spiritual
communion is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who binds us to give
visible expression to Our Lord's desire for unity.
Spiritual ecumenism also requires a change of heart and holiness
of life arising from Jesus' call to conversion The way
to reconciliation and communion unfolds when Christians feel
painful wounds of division in their hearts, in their minds
and in their prayers. Only in the context of conversion and
renewal of mind and heart can the wounded bonds of communion
be healed.
The entire ecumenical movement is under the inspiring grace
of the Holy Spirit. It is a spiritual process carried
out in faithful obedience to the Father, following the will
of Christ under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Walter Kasper President of the Pontifical Council for Christian
