We shall never know the answer to that question, but we do know it was what Jesus did as preparation for the next three years of ministry, a ministry that ended in the agony of the cross and the glory of resurrection.

I encourage you to build times of silence into whatever you do this Lent.  It is traditionally a time when people look for things to give up.  Why not give up being busy all the time... why not give up trying to do things all the time, being a busy Christian... why not offer some time to God without any expectations of how that time might be filled?  Who knows what will happen if you do.  But it will certainly help you to know afresh your love for God and more importantly God's love for you.

Best wishes,
Tom

ELSTEAD AFTERNOON WI

Over 80 members and guests attended Elstead Afternoon W.I's  Christmas Lunch in December and afterwards enjoyed a hilarious review given by their Drama Group.

The January meeting was well attended and the President, Betty Moxon presented Peggy Tillly with a plant in recognition of her hard work in producing the review at the December lunch.  Members were then asked to choose the Charity they would like to support this year, and Elstead Village Hall won by a large majority.  It was also mentioned that the Village Hall was proposing to show films monthly, commencing 9th February with "Casino Royale".

Dr Rachel Bray was the speaker this month and she gave a very informative and illustrated talk on her visit to the Seychelles.  Apparently the first records were in the 1500's when the islands were mainly inhabited by pirates.  The French were the first settlers in the 18th century, although many were slaves.  Independence was achieved in 1976.  Nowadays the population was over 80,000, with tourism providing 70% of their income.  The cuisine was Creole and French and consisted mainly of fish.

Betty thanked Dr Bray for her talk and reminded members that the next meeting was on 7th February when the speaker will be Mr Eric Marsh talking about the history of Surrey.
