RECYCLING
NEWS
Recycling Tips/Ideas:
Surrey County Council has given me ten rather smart black,
non-plastic, reusable shopping bags to give away. I have decided to give them to residents
who send me their recycling tips or ideas to share with our communities.
The first bag has gone to Pru Jones, a Thursley resident (01252 702137), who has suggested that
for households of one or two, a wormery is a very good way of disposing of food waste rather
than going in for a Green Cone which I have promoted in the past. Pru has shown me her
wormery which is not at all unsightly and sits on her patio. Pru bought hers from a company
called, appropriately, Wiggly Wigglers in Hertfordshire, www.wigglywigglers.co.uk. Tel: 01981
500391. They describe their 'Can-O-Worms' as a worm-assisted composting system which
converts organic waste from your kitchen or garden into a rich, dark growing medium and liquid
feed. The wormery will compost cooked food scraps, tea leaves, coffee grounds and vegetable
peelings. Also dried and crushed egg shells, shredded and scrunched paper and cardboard, vacuum
cleaner dust, hair, wool and cotton as well as hamster and gerbil droppings and horse and cow
manure. A few things must be avoided like meat, citrus fruits, grass clippings, leaves
and dog/cat droppings. For your interest the worms used in a wormery are not ordinary garden
worms but a mixture of species (mainly reds and dendras) selected for their composting ability.
Wiggly Wigglers' wormery is not cheap but I'm sure a less expensive one could be found
on the internet. Pru has told me she would be happy to show her wormery to anyone who
is interested. A wormery would definitely be one way of avoiding smells and maggots in
your wheelie bin and unlike my Green Cone you get something for your efforts. Real re-cycling!
