Elstead  Cinema

Disaster struck three quarters of the way through the showing of Elizabeth the Golden Age, when we experienced technical problems and the film froze.  In spite of the valiant efforts of Keith Williamson to restore the picture, and free drinks being offered to the audience whilst this was happening, proceedings had eventually to be called to a halt, when it was clear that nothing more could be done at that moment. The Committee offer their sincere apologies for any incon-venience caused and are happy to offer some recompense to our disappointed audience, in the form of a voucher entitling the bearer to a free drink at the bar.  Rest assured that we will have resolved the problem and will be up and running for our next film, which is to be shown on Saturday 14th June at 7.30 pm. The film will be Michael Clayton, a courtroom drama starring George Clooney.  Tickets will be on sale from Friday 30th May at the Spar and Batchelors Newsagents, Thursley Road, Elstead.  The audience had previously requested that we show a musical.  A survey was conducted and the most popular choice was Oliver, which we hope to show in July.

For those of you who missed the last 30 minutes of the film, here is a brief resume.  Elizabeth was furious with Bess and Raleigh when she learned of their secretive marriage and also the news of their expected child.  Raleigh however redeems himself at the Battle of the Armada when a fierce offshore wind forces the rapidly encroaching Spanish ships to drop anchor.  Raleigh takes advantage of this situation despatching fire ships into their midst which destroys and scatters the fleet.  Later Elizabeth forgives Bess and Raleigh and blesses their newborn child.  Destined to become the Virgin Queen, peace and prosperity ensued for the remainder of her reign.

At time of going to press we are sad to report that John Manches, our illustrious compere, has been admitted to hospital, and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

We look forward to seeing you on the 14th June, which this time is a Saturday.  Doors will open at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start.

There were also views of the High Street then and now showing the Clock and it's workings, Abbots Hospital and the alteration of the pillars on the Tunsgate to allow for a road into the High Street, now of course, closed.
