One lady who still uses a tea pot and tea leaves to make her tea, told me that she always puts
her finished tea leaves (grouts) underneath her rhododendrons. This is because tea is acid and
the leaves make good ericaceous compost. Used tea bags could be used equally well but they won't
look so good unless you dig them in.
Another lady puts chopped up banana skins round her roses. This is because roses like the potassium
in the skins which turn black as they rot and look alright.
Of course, both banana skins and tea bags can be put on your compost heap but it is rather nice
to put back what is needed in the right place.
A key member of Thursley Horticultural Society told me that he cuts up plastic milk bottles
to make plant labels and then writes on them with a permanent marker. He also told me
that if you cut the bottom off any plastic bottle and sink it into the ground, neck first, at
the base of a plant it is a good way of getting water to the roots of the plant where it is
really needed and cannot evaporate easily.
