ELSTEAD AFTERNOON W.I

The June meeting took place in Barbara & Terry Broome's lovely garden on a sunny afternoon, when over 60 members enjoyed a delicious cream tea.

President Betty Moxon reported that the WI of the Year competition for the large section was won by Eastwick in Surrey and for the small by Dwfor in Gwynedd, North Wales.  The less successful Surrey portfolios will be on display at the October Federation meeting at Dorking Halls.

A very successful Charity coffee morning was held in May, together with the sale of plants, and a full coach-load of members are all looking forward to the outing to the "Midsummer Magic" at Wisley on 24th June.  On 29th June an Elstead Open Garden Afternoon has been arranged for Charity with 6 members opening their gardens to the public at a small charge.  The W.I will be manning a cake stall as usual on the village green at the annual Elstead Marathon on 4th July. A jacket-potato lunch is also planned for July together with a summer outing to Parham House in Sussex.

The next meeting will be on 3rd July when the speaker will be Mr John Smith talking about "Flora Thompson - Beyond Candleford Green".

TRAIDCRAFT

Traidcraft's commitment to working with Dezign Inc. in Zimbabwe had kept their workers' hopes alive.

From mid-April the management decided to embark on a three-day week as a way of cushioning workers against high transport costs in coming to work.

Inflation is running at more than 165,000%.  A 250 million Zimbabwe dollar note has been introduced - equivalent to 50p!

Traidcraft plans to meet Dezign Inc in South Africa in July to see how they can best continue to support them.

Meanwhile they are delighted to offer for sale a colourful Market Scene Shopper for £10.  There will be one for sale at our Coffee Morning at the U.R.C. hall on Saturday 5th July.

Please support these workers for Dezign Inc. and continue to pray for a turnaround for the people of Zimbabwe very soon.

GOODBYE OR AU-REVOIR

Having lived in Elstead for nearly 40 years, Peter & I will reluctantly be leaving the village on 23rd May, moving into a bungalow, which I know will be more suitable for Peter's needs.

We would like to thank all who have been a tower of strength to us, especially since Peter's accident in September 2005.  I don't think I could have carried on without the help & support we received.

I am not going to "name names", but can assure you we will keep in touch.

We send our love & best wishes to all.

Rita & Peter Tapp
