ELSTEAD ROYAL BRITISH LEGION CLUB LIMITED

Closure Threat

The Legion Club held a Special General Meeting on Friday 22nd of August when members were given 2 options:

  • To continue the club without paid staff. All work to be done by volunteers - Members were asked to volunteer for Bar, Cellar, Administration or other work.
  • Close the club - which would result in the premises being closed.

The club has been running at a loss for 5 of the last 7 years and if the second option above were adopted then on the "Closure Date" club assets would JUST meet liabilities.

There was a positive attitude among those present with 2 members proposing that a business plan should be created and keeping the club alive by self help until income could again support full time staff.

Of those present 118 (of about 200 members) voted for the option to continue - work being done by paid volunteers with one vote to close the club. An action group was to be setup to propose ways forward which included applying for grants for improvements and new services.

LINK ROMANIA SHOEBOX APPEAL 2008

The Link Romania Shoebox Appeal will again be organised for Elstead and Thursley in time to be transported and distributed at Christmas. I know that this seems to be a long way off but if you would like to contribute we have to start thinking about what to put into our boxes now. Leaflets about what to put into the boxes will be available at the back of the churches, St James  and the URC.

Could I ask you to let me have these by the end of October please, as I have to get them to Worthing by the beginning of November. You can leave the completed boxes at the back of the church, or get them to our house, or I can collect locally if this will help.

May I remind everyone that a £2 coin has to be Sello-taped to the box. This is to offset the transport costs. Please contact me if you would like any further information.

Thank you
