ELSTEAD
AFTERNOON
W.I
Elstead Afternoon W.I met again after the summer break with 57 members and 3 guests attending.
Betty Moxon, the President, welcomed everyone and gave a resume of events held since the W.I
last met in July. The cake stall at Elstead Marathon was well supported as usual, the jacket
potato lunch held in a member's garden was a great success, and the coach outing to Parham House
was enjoyed by everyone.
Plans for the autumn include an Arts & Craft Exhibition to be held in the United Reform
Church Elstead on 20/21st September and a fund-raising beetle drive on 21st
October in the Village Hall. A theatre trip early in the New Year was also suggested.
The speaker this month was Pam Goodall who gave a very interesting and amusing talk "Riding
it out - a solo bike ride around the world aged 60". Pam undertook this amazing journey in the
year 2000 and covered 10,000 miles and 22 countries. She said her memories of the journey was
the friendliness and generosity of everyone she met, being invited into the poorest of home
with offers of food and shelter. Apparently, Vietnam was the only country she found very
threatening, although she did experience a problem in Romania with 4 teenage boys who tried
to stop her and steal her bike! A remarkable story from a truly brave lady.
The next meeting will be on 2nd October, when the speaker will be Debbie Lewington,
talking about "Iridology".
