Christine and Keith Hayward grow cannas.  For the uninitiated, cannas are exotic looking, statuesque bedding plants of robust growth and military bearing, with spear-shaped leaves of colours varying from lime green, through bronze to black. And as for the flowers ..their brilliant brazen colours are beyond the scope of my pen.  You should have been there to be astonished by the slides!

Keith fell for their charms years ago and filled his garden with cannas, assorted. His wife, fortunately also fell under their spell and when Keith retired went along with his plan to buy a nursery in Bisley.  Since when they have grown, bought, sold and imported from all over the world, varieties which have only been bred for a century. Prior to that the species was only found wild in central America and was an insignificant plant, far removed from the present flamboyant cultivars now available, and largely grown to be eaten!

However grown for whatever reason, they are easy plants to raise.  Gardens will never be the same following their discovery.

Next meeting on 10th November 2008 will be the AGM  followed by a talk by Mr J Vellum one of our members (and ex Head Forester of Hampton Estates) entitled "All about trees".
