Elstead  Cinema

The film choice for October was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystall Skull, which generated a lot of interest from the village and resulted in a sell out.  The Cinema Committee were pleased to welcome families to this popular film and both young and old enjoyed the thrills and spills of Indy's daring adventures.  We even had two Indy look-alikes complete with hats!  A popular addition was Batchelors Newsagents, who act as our ticket agents, selling packets of sweets that went down well with the children.

We have an exciting programme in the months ahead with Into the Wild (Cert 15) to be shown on 14th November.  Tickets priced at £5 will be on sale from Batchelors Newsagents from 31st October.

We have just received confirmation that Mamma Mia can be shown on 5th December - advance indications are that this will be very popular and tickets will sell out soon after they are available on 21st November. In the New Year we will have Chronicles of Nania - Prince Caspian.   We look forward to seeing you there.

ELSTEAD AFTERNOON W.I

President Betty Moxon welcomed over 60 members and 2 visitors to the October meeting on a sunny autumn afternoon.

Betty reported that the Arts & Craft group had another successful exhibition at the URC Hall in Elstead and yet again raised a substantial sum to benefit both the URC and the Village Hall which is the W.I chosen charity this year.  The last fund-raising event this year will be a Beetle Drive on Tues. 21st Oct. at 2.30 pm in the Village Hall.  In November a meeting for senior members will be held in the URC Hall.

Members then had a most interesting talk by Debbie Lewington on "Iridology" which is an alternative medicine technique when the iris of the eye is examined with a flashlight and magnifying glass to look for tissue changes and to predict any health problems which may be developing.  Drugs can affect the iris, particularly quinine which causes the iris to turn green and yellow and the pupil can also show signs of stress.  Apparently the irises of African, Indian and Caribbean people look like deep velvet and are therefore difficult to read.  Debbie said that Iridologists see the eyes as "windows" into the body's state of health.   Venetia Pierce gave the vote of thanks.

The next meeting will be the A.G.M on 6th November when a new Committee will be elected.

ARTS & CRAFTS EXHIBITION

Elstead Afternoon W.I. Art Group would like to thank you for your support at our recent Arts & Crafts Exhibition in September.  In spite of a slow start on the Saturday, probably due to a number of events being held on that day, we were pleased to receive a positive response on the Sunday, with many people taking advantage of the excellent weather.  The pictures and craft items, particularly the rag rugging, attracted a great deal of interest and at close of business we raised approximately £1,000 which will be divided between the U.R.C. and Elstead Village Hall.
