I know what you're thinking ….. why's
that mad fool writing about cricket in December? Well, simple really! To acknowledge some individuals
who performed heroically for the club in 2008. I'm talking about our trophy winners, those who
deservedly picked up cups at our excellent annual dinner, held in the Thursley Road pavilion.
In what was unquestionably a mixed season for the club a handful of performances stood out.
The list below attempts to do their efforts justice:-
1st X1 Batting Josh Berry (40+ average, miles ahead of most others)
1st X1 Bowling Josh Berry (most wickets, best economy)
1st X1 Fielding Morgan Pearse (six victims in win at Grayshott)
1st X1 Best Performance Josh Berry (109 not out v Grayswood)
2nd X1 Batting Pat Murphy (solid performer all season)
2nd X1 Bowling Dougie Barker (regular wicket taker)
2nd X1 Fielding Les Stevenson (constantly enthusiastic)
2nd X1 Best Performance Pat Murphy (wickets / runs in Lindford win)
Under 21 Player Josh Berry ("best I'Anson century I've everseen" - I'Anson League
umpire)
Under 18 Player Chris Terry (century for 2nds, runs/wickets/ wicketkeeper
for the 1sts)
Ladies Trophy Karen Terry (rounded up enough females for an enthusiastic ladies
team
& ran the Under 15s)
Sportsman of the Year Dave Cooper (ensured the club received the prestigious ClubMark
award)
Player of the Year Josh Berry / Chris Terry (aged just 16 & 15 they are stars
of the present & of the future - 'nuff said)
The dinner was, yet again, a splendid affair and a big "Thank You" goes, on behalf of all members
of Elstead Cricket Club, to Milva Sandison and Karen Terry for putting on an absolutely fantastic
meal.
The evening was rounded off by a very special presentation to someone who is leaving the club
to move abroad. Ian Gould has, at various times over many years, been secretary, 2nd X1 captain,
fixture secretary, barman and chief BBQ chef. In short, he's been a club stalwart and will be
greatly missed. All I can say is, if you've ever seen Ian keep wicket you'll know why the presentation
of an inflatable crocodile was entirely appropriate. Quite simply, we wish Ian and Denise all
the best for their new life in Dubai.
