NEWS FROM ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL

Reporting on the meeting held on 20th October 2008

Over 20 Elstead residents have expressed interest in allotments. The Parish Council Clerk, Chris Newman, is obtaining estimates for clearing the land and organising a water supply to each of the two sites earmarked for the scheme - Broomfield and Hazelwood. Once obtained, the Clerk will write to applicants. There was some discussion about the possibility of using the Council-owned field (known as Extension Land) beside Burford Lodge Recreation Ground. This would easily accommodate the number of villagers interested in allotments, and would have the added benefit of only needing the connection of one water supply.

The Council examined plans to extend the car park at Burford Lodge Recreation Ground and agreed in principle as it will provide eight extra parking spaces. Councillors expressed concern that access from the Hazelwood footpath to the recreation ground would be compromised by the extended car park and felt pedestrian markings would be a safety benefit. The next step is to request tenders for the work.

The importance of maintaining grass quality on Elstead's two recreation grounds was expressed by Councillor Pat Murphy. He is obtaining a quote from the existing grass cutting contractors to apply lawn treatments. He treated part of the Thursley Road Recreation Ground with fertiliser and weed killer earlier this year, with noticeable improvement in the appearance and quality of the grass. The Council agreed that it was essential to properly care for these valuable village assets.

The next meeting is at 7.30 pm on 1st December at the URC Hall, Milford Road, Elstead.

The public is welcome and anyone wishing to raise a matter relating to Council business is able to do so at 8 pm. See you there!

ELSTEAD AFTERNOON W.I

48 members and 2 visitors gathered for November's Annual General Meeting. President Betty Moxon welcomed Gill Corke, W.I Advisor and 2 members from Seale & Sands who were acting as tellers.

Betty reported on the events held over the past year, highlighting particularly the Open Gardens' Afternoon in June and the trip to Parham House in July.  October was a very busy month which included visits to the Farnham Group Meeting, and the  Autumn Federation Meeting in Dorking.  The last fund raising event of the year was a Beetle Drive hugely enjoyed by all participants, particularly the sole male!  On 11th November a meeting for senior members will be held in the URC Hall, and the Christmas Lunch will be on 16th December.  Gifts were presented to retiring Committee members and W.I members who had contributed throughout the year.

Secretary, Joan Dalton, then read the annual report of activities, which showed just what a busy year it had been, finishing with a tribute to Betty in her first year as President.

Three new members were elected to serve on the 2009 Committee, and Betty Moxon was re-elected as President.

After the business, members were able to enjoy tea, and the arts and crafts exhibition.

The next meeting will be the 4th December 2008.
