WOMEN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
Friday 6th March 2009
St James Church Elstead at 10.30 a.m.

This year's service comes from one of the most uniquely diverse countries in the Pacific Ocean. Have a look at these statements which relate to the inhabitants:

  • The indigenous peoples are one of the most heterogeneous in the world.
  • There are more than 1,000 cultural groups which are the root of society, resulting in many different languages, expressions of art, dances, costumes, music and architecture.
  • Many unusual customs prevail - such as initiations of adolescents into adulthood for both males and females.
  • A matrilineal and patrilineal system where in the former children inherit names and land through their mother and in the latter through their father but, nevertheless, inequality is a crucial concern for women.
  • They are governed by a constitutional monarchy.
  • The Papuans have light brown skin and curly hair.
  • The New Guineans and Islanders have dark brown skin and frizzy hair.
  • The Bougainvilleans are darker or black in their skin colour.

You will have deduced that the country is Papua New Guinea which consists of over 600 islands with beautiful landscapes endowed with rich natural resources; but there are many social issues including violence. The Christian denominations there realised that they had to unite to work together to try to help this diverse society overcome and solve its problems. It is out of this unity that this year's theme developed

'In Christ there are many members yet one body'.

Everybody is invited to this service where we will hear more about the country.

SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL'S LOCAL COMMITTEE.

I recently received this information which may be of interest to village residents Ed

In April 2002, the Council set up Local Committees in each of Surrey's 11 boroughs and districts. Meetings are held locally and members of the public are welcome to attend. The public can ask questions and submit petitions on local Surrey County Council issues.
The purpose of these committees is to :

  • give communities a bigger say over decisions affecting them
  • help organisations work more closely together at a local level
  • be more responsive to people in Surrey.
Local Committees have delegated powers and budgets to:
  • take important local decisions
  • promote effective partnership working with the borough, district, parish and town councils, and other organisations such as health and the Police.
The role of the Local Committee is to:
  • take decisions on local highways issues, and also support local projects and actions which make a difference to the local community
  • review the performance of the Council's services in the local area and recommend improvements if necessary
  • identify community concerns on key issues, and take action locally or represent these views to the Council, where the County Council would need to support the change.
