GOOD COMPANIONS

Our first meeting this year was well attended after the bad weather and Illnesses.

Mr Lukehurst spoke about his life in an orphanage. He and his brother were sent away at the age of 4 and 2 he being the eldest. The Orphanage was run by the Navy so they were issued with uniforms, no instructions issued with the uniforms, no instructions were give how to dress - you just watched others and did the same.  The rules were strict as usual, with parades and inspections.  He was separated from his brother because of the age difference. No personal questions were asked, if you were told you listened.

At the age of 11 he went  to Greenwich to train I the boys service - learning knot tying and other it interesting skills to do with boats and sailing. When he reached 17 he joined the navy working his way to become an officer serving overseas in China and finally Australia for 25 years. He came in contact with his brother who also did well.

My thanks to our tea ladies and also for a very good raffle.

Next month Jean Vassey will talk on being a Brown Owl.

Ladies please try to recruit us some more members.

RECYCLING NEWS

I am pleased to report that the next Bring and Take Morning for Elstead and Thursley will be on Saturday 14th March, from 10 am to 12 noon, in Thursley Village Hall.  Just right to inspire you to have a Spring clear out!  The morning will be run as on all previous occasions but if you have any queries do please phone me or see further details in next month's magazine.

Waste Fact:  One recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.
