ELSTEAD AFTERNOON WI
Report of the March 2009 meeting

President Betty Moxon welcomed members to the first meeting for two months - the February meeting had been cancelled because of the truly awful weather.  Members gave a warm welcome to Maureen Barrington, a new member, and Jackie Stevenson who was a guest.

Betty also reported on the President's meeting - the Farnham Group would continue with Ann Challis as convenor, and members were encouraged to go to the next meeting on 12th May which was about the Surrey Air Ambulance.  Each year the WI chooses a local charity to support and a number  of very worthy causes had been nominated. After a vote the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice was chosen, with the Surrey Air Ambulance as runner up. There was some discussion about how the WI could support the community better and Bea Ainsley spoke about Help in Elstead. Members were reminded about the arrangements for the trip to see Les Miserables on March 11th.

The speaker for the afternoon was Tess Burrows who spoke and showed slides about her journey around sacred sites in Tibet to broadcast messages of peace. She started by blowing a traditional conch shell to ensure everyone was paying attention - which we were! We were all fascinated by her pictures and stories of the hardship suffered by the Tibetan people and admired the work she and her charity had done to raise money for schools in Tibet and to work positively for a more peaceful world. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a splendid tea.

The next meeting of the WI will be on Thursday 2nd April in the URC Hall as PETS would be using the Village Hall. The speaker will be Tom Yendall from Mouth and Foot Painter's Gallery in Selbourne.

Elstead  Cinema

Body of Lies, an action thriller, starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo Di Caprio was the choice for March's film.

We will be showing Changeling on 17th April.  Please note the change of date due to the PETS production at the beginning of April and Easter the following week.  Changeling is based on a true story set in Los Angeles in 1928, when a single mother is separated from her child. The boy is found by the L.A. Police Department and reunited with his mother ...  but it is not her son.    Tickets for Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie, will be available from Batchelors Newsagents from the 3rd April.
