Family Walk of 10 kilometres

Sunday 10th May 2009

as part of  St James' Festival weekend
touching parts of the Elstead Parish Boundary
starting outside St James' Church at 12 noon.

Bring a picnic lunch with you.
ALL WELCOME !

We start and finish outside St James' Church and visit some interesting and scenic parts of the Commons, including the Moat [picnic stop], Lion's Mouth on Hankley Common [near the ½-way check-point] and Stockbridge Pond [near the ¾-way check-point].  From there, the route follows the River Wey then towards Westbrook.

Everyone on the walk will receive a route-sheet at the start. The ½-way check-point is at the Dropping Zone car park on Hankley Common. It is perhaps a suitable planned finishing point for groups with very young children. [Please run a car out there before you start, if possible!]  Stockbridge Pond is the closest we get  to Tilford. It's on the far side of Yagdon Hill, by the Golf Course. The ¾-way check-point will be close by. Both check-points will be manned and in touch by mobile phone. There will be emergency transport back to Elstead from both. However, please ensure, if you start the walk then decide to leave before the end, that you inform the start/finishing point, as otherwise marshals could turn out to look for you unnecessarily. Sensible shoes and clothing, including wet weather protection, are recommended. Take something to drink with you on the walk.

Enjoy a pleasant afternoon's walk with family and friends, taking care on the very short road sections. Out on the commons look out for Dartford Warblers, Hobbies, Wood Larks and numerous dragonflies. Binoculars and a nature book might be useful.

The Meeting on March 12th and attended by 15 Members, were treated to a Flower Arranging demonstration by Gillia who advertises in the Magazine under the name Gillia du Pass and provides bouquets, arrangements etc., for Weddings and any occasion where flowers are required. She trained at Merrist Wood and has lived and brought up her family, on the outskirts of Elstead for the past 15 years.

Gillia brought with her two arrangements, in containers, consisting of iris, anemones, roses and tulips, and constructed a further three, one of which had an Easter theme with moss, spring flowers and quails eggs. A buttonhole was also made, by request, illustrating the wiring required.

Following the demonstration the arrangements were, as usual, raffled.

The next Meeting is on April 9th, when a talk will be given by P.C. Hawkes.

There is a trip to Bognor being arranged for May 7th, if anyone is interested please contact Sandra on 702 050..
