A Speaker who visited us a year ago
and spoke about 'Patio Planting', returned to demonstrate the art of 'Planting up Containers'.
Mrs. Doris Smallwood made a welcome return, bringing with her a fine display of different
kinds of plants in different kinds of pots. During a recent visit to Thailand, she was impressed
by the use of water and lotus-lilies in small containers and suggested how this idea can be
adapted with a plastic bowl and dwarf water-lilies. She encouraged us to use pots with brightly
coloured flowers or foliage to lighten up uninteresting corners of the garden. Placed in groups,
even with one empty or tipped on its side, they can brighten a dull corner. Plantings should
be matched with the texture and colour of the pot, and with surrounding plants in the garden.
Terracotta pots must be frost resistent - look for a thick rim which is less likely to flake;
resin pots are light in weight and weather nicely; wooden half-barrels are good for large
plants and team well with ferns, hostas, and the bright colours of coleus; and an old wheelbarrow
can be wheeled about the garden. We were shown how to plant a container, with a good layer
of crocks in the bottom for drainage and also weight to prevent being blown over by strong
winds. Recommended compost is 2/3 multipurpose, and 1/3 vermiculite with coarse grit. Remove
plants from their plastic pots, tear off all compacted roots round the base and sides, and
gently tease out smaller roots before placing in position. Regular watering is important;
use a weak fertilizer, but never when plants are dry or sickly; dead-head to extend the flowering
period. When choosing plants, look for co-ordination in foliage colour and shape as well as
in flower colour.
We were given a wealth of information from someone deeply enthusiastic about her subject,
and Mrs. Smallwood was warmly applauded, with a promise for a return visit.
